Behind the scenes

More complicated than it might look . .

Though we love to celebrate some of the charity’s successes widely, other work sometimes has to remain behind the scenes.

Alongside our projects and publications our Associate Louise spends much of her time researching complex copyrights, seeking to find ways to bring deceased composers and writers to the fore.

This work might include building close and trusting relationships with the executors of estates where composers and writers are still in copyright; obtaining highly-specialised legal advice around copyrights, Wills and other related legal matters; networking with public and private archives to explore ways of sharing knowledge with our Supporters, and reaching out to academics to enable them to bring their own studies ‘off the page’ and into the hands of musicians and the ears of the public.

We know this ‘hidden’ work is an essential part of MoV’s purpose, to begin to reveal a more balanced story of music-making and composition (especially of the 20th Century) not just to raise up those who had the means and connections to secure their own legacies.

Much of this research is painstaking and lengthy – we may need to research a copyright carefully for several years before we can tell you about it! – and it comes at substantial cost.

The cost of much of this work will always outweigh any funds we might generate from the sales of our publications, and as we often make known, there are few-to-no dedicated grant-funders for such interdisciplinary work. We need to build up our network of regular donors to find a good balance between paid and unpaid labour from our contractors.

If you can help support the wider work of the charity please consider making a donation via this Charities Aid Foundation link (through which Gift Aid can also be applied):
